Summary:
The history of surgical rehabilitation of the upper limb in the tetraplegic patients begins in the 1940s, under the influence of Sterling Bunnell. There followed a period of trial and error, and it is not until the late 1960s and the 1970s that the foundations of that surgery were firmly established, through publications from individual surgeons all over the world: Freehafer (USA) in 1967, Douglas Lamb (Scotland) in 1971, and the two major contributions made by Zancolli (Argentina) and Eric Moberg (Sweden) both in 1975. Pr Zancolli relates this pioneer period in this issue.
